Shackelford scores franchise-record 54 points as Suns top Capitanes

Jaden Shackelford delivered a historic performance in the Valley Suns' season finale, erupting for a franchise-record and career-high 54 points to power his team to a 114-94 victory over the visiting Mexico City Capitanes on Wednesday night.

Shackelford was unstoppable, shooting 16-for-26 from the field, including five 3-pointers, and adding eight rebounds for the Suns (11-25). Sean McDermott provided support with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Zhuric Phelps orchestrated the offense with a game-high nine assists and 16 points.

For the Capitanes (24-11), who entered the game fighting for playoff positioning, Reynan dos Santos led the scoring with 20 points. Andersson Garcia recorded a dominant double-double with 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. RJ Melendez and Wade Taylor IV each chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

The Suns seized control from the outset. Shackelford capped the first quarter with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to establish a 31-20 lead, and Kalib Boone ended the first half with a tip-in at the horn to give Valley a 54-41 edge. The Suns built their advantage to as many as 25 points in the second half. Mexico City made a push in the third quarter, but Shackelford's offensive explosion kept the Capitanes at bay and secured a memorable win for Valley to close out its campaign.

Up next: The Capitanes will play at the Austin Spurs at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Suns have concluded their 2025-26 season.
